What Uruguay lacks in size it makes up for in culture. At the center of that culture, is El Tambor or the Drum. The Tambor EP has been inspired by this culture and the live drums used are authentic Uruguayan quintos made in Uruguay. The EP also tries to capture the Charrua Spirit of the culture by replicating the native flute sounds used by the Charrua people. The Charrua's are the native americans of Uruguay who were known for their warrior spirit and traditional wooden flute music. Paine Gallery. Chicago-based artist Juan Angel Chávez will install a multi-directional, multi-layer sound experience available for performances from September 23 to November 22. Comprised out of found material seen everyday, such as old billboard signs, wood panel siding and traffic cones, the large-scale speaker sculpture will turn the gallery into a laboratory for sound. A diverse schedule of music genres performed from inside and outside of the speaker sculpture has been programmed by the Curatorial Programs Department at MassArt. The interactive sculpture is large enough to ensconce a 5-piece band inside and host over 250 audience members around the structure. During moments when no performance is scheduled, visitors are allowed to enter the sculpture and investigate sounds of their own. Specifications of the Performance Space The speaker project is a room that measures 25 ft in length, 16 ft in width and 10 ft in height. The sculpture contains four surfaces designed to be played and/or modify sound. On the two sides of the work, there are handcrafted speaker cones that measure 8 ft in diameter to an 18-inch point. One wall is made up entirely of traffic cones to amplify or muffle sound.
